American School of The Hague (ASH) is looking for a full-time Elementary School Teaching Assistant to support our dual language pathway classroom SY 2024-2025.

Start date is August 1, 2024.

Location: Wassenaar, on the north side of The Hague
Language Skills: Fluent Dutch and fluent English are essential

You are a certificated, Elementary School Teaching Assistant. You have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent university degree preferred. You have some experience working with young children, preferably teaching in an American, Canadian or international school. You have both a theoretical understanding and classroom experience in applying developmentally appropriate, inclusive and differentiated practices. 

In addition you;

  • speak both Dutch and English fluently,
  • work independently and can understand and carry out oral and written directions,
  • respect the confidentiality of information pertaining to the school, students, and teachers,
  • serve as a positive role model for children demonstrating values of empathy, respect, integrity and responsibility. 

The Role: The role is supervised by the Elementary School Principal who work with our Elementary School students. You’ll work under the supervision of the classroom teacher and you report to the Elementary School Principal. Your primary responsibility is to support strong language acquisition in both Dutch and English, through both academic and social skills instruction. You will also support teachers in the performance of routine tasks related to the instructional assignment.

The Work: As an Elementary School Teaching Assistant, your daily activities involve aiding the classroom teacher in the implementation of the educational program. This may include work with students individually, in small groups or as an entire class. You strongly support the intense language acquisition experience for our students in both Dutch and English. You monitor student progress and help assess students under the guidance of the teacher. You support the teacher’s classroom management plan and philosophy. You direct parent inquiries regarding students’ behaviors and instruction to the classroom teacher. You attend special area classes with the students and provide support at the request of the special area teacher. You also supervise students at recess, lunch, during transitions, etc.

You support to the classroom teacher to prepare lessons and make sure the classroom is ready for student learning, e.g., grading assignments, photocopying, laminating, filing, preparing and organizing instructional materials, assisting with the set up and clean-up of the classroom and supplies, assisting with toileting and hygiene, etc. 

In addition you;

  • accompany classes on field trips,
  • assume teaching role when asked to substitute for the classroom teacher,
  • attend all faculty and whole school meetings,
  • perform any other task as may reasonably be asked from a Teaching Assistant.
