Substitute School Nurse SY 2024-2025

The American School of The Hague is looking for a flexible individual who can be available to cover for our school nurse team, when required. If you are internationally minded, have a nursing license and are permitted to work in the European Union, we would love to hear from you. 
You would be covering for two campuses when needed. The substitute school nurse provides skilled nursing care and management of the special needs of students and staff. For students with complex medical needs, the substitute school nurse may act as a liaison for the school,
home and outside medical facilities. The substitute school nurse promotes student wellness and assists in maintaining a healthy school environment. This role reports directly to the HR manager.

Skills and competencies

You keep your head cool and act decisively in all situations. Whether it is treating a minor injury or providing first aid in an emergency situation, you know what to do and how to do it in a way that is effective, calm, kind and compassionate.
In addition to a nursing license, you have: 

  • Nursing experience, preferably in a school environment,
  • Familiarity with the nursing process: assessments, diagnosing, planning, implementing and evaluation of the care for students,
  • Experience working with students from pre-school to Grade 12, preferably in an international school environment,
  • A strong background and knowledge of health education and special education,
  • Must be comfortable working in a multicultural environment that entails being open to people with different backgrounds, religions and beliefs, race, sexual orientations, etc.,
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills,
  • Preferably you have experience dealing with emergency situations.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Provide first aid and emergency medical care to staff and students,
  • Student hearing and vision screening,
  • Administer and/or supervise the administration of prescription medication and over the counter medication as needed to students,
  • Address potential health problems that are barriers to learning or symptoms of underlying medical conditions,
  • Establish and maintain appropriate record keeping and reporting formats and procedures,
  • Provide care for students with diabetes, seizure disorders, asthma, food allergies and other medical needs,
  • Participate in team meetings with student support teams when medical input, interpretation, or consultation is needed.
